Black Box Rules

The first type resulting ray is a complete miss. A ray has entered the BlackBox and exited out of the opposite side.
In this example a ray has entered the Blackbox at location 10 and exited at location 31.

Simple absorption (Hit)

The next type is also very simple - The ray entered the Blackbox (in this case from location 20) and it has an atom in its path.
A hit is indicated by a black marker.

Deflections occur when the ray encounters an atom in an adjoining row or column. In this example the ray has entered the Blackbox at location 14. It travelled along the horizontal path until it encountered the atom in the adjoining row 13. This forces the ray to turn 90 degrees, the opposite side of the atom encountered.

Double delfection

This is where two deflections cancel one-another out. They force the resulting marker to end up in the same location as the entering ray.

This type of ray is shown by a white marker (to differentiate it from a hit).

This is where the ray encounters one atom and then encounters another atom.
Here the ray entered the Blackbox at location 6 and exits at location 4.

Multiple detour

In this example, the ray bounces off all 4 atoms. In fact, it bounces off two of them twice!

There is no time limit. Points are gained for working out the atom locations in as fewer moves as possible.

Minds Eye Milliard Maze

Millard Maze Icon

A Billion mazes in one App!!

We developed this App in February 2013 using Adobe Director to output to iOS.

Millard Maze screen shot

Note - This is "Work in Progress" (09-02-2013)

This game was based on a project we worked on way back in 2005 – Target Zero for Carillion Plc:

Case study - Target Zero

As soon as we heard that Adobe are planning to release a long awaited verion of Director (version 12 – four years since the last release) which would have outupt to iOS, we managed to get ourselves on the Director pre-release program and create a version of the 3D maze App for the iPad.

About the Game

This App generates infiinate mazes in 3D (actually, we set a restriction to the possible number of mazes based on the possible base-36 Maze ID's the the user can enter - The total number of mazes is therefore the total number of possible maze ID's which is 1,088,391,150!).

It uses the "Dynamiks" physics engine so that the user can roll the ball around in an attempt to get the ball out of the maze in as shorter time as possible. Navigation through the maze is achieved by tilting the device left, right, forward and backward.

The user has the option to have his / her scores recorded on the 3D Maze score database. All the scores are displayed in the App interface score table.
When the user completes a maze, another random maze is generated each increment gets a little bit larger. The score that the user receives is based on the size and complexity of the maze. The user can keep playing and the highest score gets pushed up to the score database.

However, the user cannot play a same maze over and over improving the score each time - only the first time a maze id is logged can be scored.

How to play

There are two 3D views of the same maze – a 3D view from behind the ball;

Milliard Maze 3D View

and a plan view from above the maze:

The user can pick between the two views to make each active – if the 3D camera view is active a forward tilt forces the ball to roll away from the camera, left / right rotates the view around the the ball; if the plan view is active the ground rotates with the alignment of the device.

Click here to download the Millard Maze App from the Apple App Store (not available yet!)

Note: At the moment Milliard Maze is free! Although we are thinking about adding a small price for the App at a later date.

Minds Eye Black Box

Minds Eye Black Boxmolecular structure

Black Box is an iPhone App we developed in February 2012.

This App is a logic game for the iPhone for one or two players.

It is a true representation of a board game in the 70's of the same name (I still have the boxed game!)

The best way I can describe this game is that it's a cross between "Battleships" and another board game back in the 70's called "Mastermind".

The Original Game

Black Box original boxed game

The original game was created by Eric Solomon and was published by Waddingtons in the mid 1970s. It was a game for two players.

It consisted of a black plastic grid, coloured markers and metal balls. One player (the hider) would mark on a card the locations of 'atoms'. The other player (the seeker) would place coloured markers around the perimeter to try to deduce the locations of the atoms.

Into the Twenty-first century!

The Minds Eye Black Box App is a game for one player or two players using the same mobile device (one player is against the computer). The next version will be a 2 player version that allows players to play between each other using two separate devices.

How to play

black box photo

Black Box is played on a two-dimensional grid. The object of the game is to discover a 'molecule' by finding the locations of four 'atoms' hidden within the grid, by the use of the minimum number of probes ("rays") fired into the black box.

The molecule of atoms is hidden by the 'hider' (a second person or the computer). The 'Seeker' sends a ray into the blackbox from any of the 32 perimeter locations (this is represented by a coloured marker). This will result in another coloured marker appearing in any of the 32 locations. The colour and location of the resulting marker gives a hint to locations of the atoms.

Have a look at the rules and screen shots links below to get a better idea of how the app works. Or, even better still, download it from the App Store - it's Free!!!!

I grew up with Black Box and have never known anyone else to have it or know about it. I really didn't think there would be an app for that but there are several. I can definitely say yours tops them all. Thank you so much for bringing this awesome game to the iPhone platform. Now I am just looking for iPhone versions of skirrid and twixt. There are similar games but they don't have the same qualities as those classics. Thanks again!!!

Real fun game - Nice game with fantastic graphics. Kids are really enjoying playing on their own and with each other.

A 'Ride On Time' - Great fun - Ingenious little puzzle game, superbly translated into a tidy little app. 3D version upgrade would be intriguing Mr Mindseye.

Note: Black Box is entirely free! (also, it does not contain any adverts).

Free App Design BookletOur App design books allow you streamline the design process when developing Apps for smart devices.

An App which has been well designed right from the start works out to be far more cost effective as opposed to jumping in and coding straight away. With that in mind, our design books contain sketches of smart devices for you to fill-in with your designs for each screen of your app.

You may select from iPhone, iPad, or a combination of both. Although we have used iPhone and iPad for the designs, there is no reason why these cannot be used for other devices (e.g. Android). The work involved in creating design books for other devices would be substantial as the types are too numerous.

At the moment (25th March 2013) we have just the FREE versions to help you get started. We aim to have more (paid for) versions available very soon...
