Case study - SPeAR® (Sustainable Project Appraisal Routine)

Minds Eye created the SPeAR® program in 2009 and has created variants such as ASPIRE, CCAF, and SPeAR for Schools. The current version of SPeAR® is Version 11.2 (released January 2012)


What is SPeAR® ?

SPeAR® is a software tool created by Minds Eye Interactive for Arup to ensure sustainability performance across a wide range of topics within a project. With this tool engineers, planners and consultants are able to support sustainability decision making and communication within projects.
SPeAR® covers a full range of project topics and is fully customisable.
For each topic, there are a number of sub-topics and for each the user is asked a number of questions and also potential best case and worst case sustainability scenarios are displayed. This information is used to help the user score each sub-topic and an amalgamation of these scores is shown graphically using a traffic light type system on the SPeAR® chart. On completion, each appraisal can be checked and approved by others.
Data summary tables can be generated into both Word and Excel for audit purposes.

The following sequence describes the processes the a user would go through when creating a typical SPeAR® appraisal (click on the images to expand them) :

SPeAR Start As the program starts, the user is presented with the Startup window. This contains a number of random images on the right-hand-side plus a welcome message.
There are a number of options available to the user at this stage such as create a new apppraisal, open a file, select from a list of recently opened files etc.

This gives the user a new appraisal with an empty SPeAR chart.

Before proceeding the user might want to adjust the details entered for this project.

The Job details window is the place to enter this information.

Now the user enters the data.

This is in the form of scores and notes in the data entry window.

For each segment of the chart, the data entry shows any number of Sub-indicators. The user must set a score for each of these sub-indicators by clicking on one of the 5 coloured scoring buttons. These range from -1 through to 3.

To aid the user when scoring each sub-indicator, the data entry window displays questions that the user should be thinking about. Also "Best case" and "Worst case" scenarios.

The user must also enter some notes within each sub-indicator to explain the reason for the score.

As the scores are entered into the data entry the chart gets updated automatically. Here we see the chart with all indicators filled-in with scores.

The scores range from Red on the outside through orange and yellow to Green on the inside.

The SPeAR chart allows the user to immediately see the areas where they area up to a good standard and the areas that need further attention.

At any stage in scoring the appraisal the user can make adjustments to the indicators and sub indicators in order to adapt the SPeAR appraisal to any project.

Here we see the indicator tool. This allows indicators to be added, modified or removed.

All of the indicators and sub-indicators of the current appraisal are displayed in a tree-view on the left-hand-side of the interface. Adjustments to all the text elements of each indicator / sub-indicator can be made within the edit panels in the right-hand-side.

New indicators that have been added to the appraisal are displayed in red.

Any modifications made to the appraisal must be justified. A list of modifications are displayed by selecting the 4th tab (Modifications)

The user must write some text in the Justification edit box to explain the reason for the modification.

Blank SPeAR chart Here we see the job details screen once again. The difference this time is that all the items have been checked-off. As the user updates the appraisal the items get checked-off in the job details window automatically. For example, once all the indicators have been scored a green tick will apear in the appropriate row. The appraisal can only be checked and then approved once all the preceding items have been checked-off.

Blank SPeAR chart As soon as the appraisal gets 'Approved' (in the job details window), the chart image changes: the word "DRAFT" disapears and an "Issue date" is applied.

SPeAR can output images of the chart in multiple file formats.

It can also output reports in Word and Excel. The user simply selects from the multiple templates available.

The program will create an output report for each of the templates selected.

2 We create a design brief and send it back to you.


3 We create mockup "Wireframe" views of the App. This will work out the complete interfaces of the App design. The images are deliberately made to look like sketches so that you won’t be distracted by small design details and you can focus on the more important aspects. Further modifications can be applied to the design brief at this stage


4 We work out completion deadlines and give you a price quotation. This is the price we will honour. There will be no hidden or extra fees except where both parties agree to a "Change Request"


5 1st Prototype creation - this is usually run within an iPhone Simulator. You see the App design coming together and are able to add comments and suggestions


6 Beta testing - the program is pretty much complete aside from a few tweaks and streamlining of the whole process


7 Complete and sign-off!



We take raw data (e.g. output from analysis programs or recorded data from actual testing) and use it to generate an easily understood graphical representation of the data. Certain values can be enhanced to enable the viewer to quickly pinpoint areas of interest.

We have created Data Visualisation programs for the last 8 years using programs such as 3D Studio MAX and Macromedia Director.


Arup SPeAR

Arup SPeAR is a software tool created by Minds Eye Interactive for Arup Partnership International to ensure sustainability performance across a wide range of topics within a project. With this tool engineers are able to support sustainability decision making and communication within projects.

VR Daylight Analysis

A VR application that allows the user to "walk" around a building and click on walls of interest. A "false colour" image is generated so that a user can immediately see the intensity of light.

Daylight Control Algorithm

A program to demonstrate accurate lighting control in museums and galleries. It makes use of actual daylight analysis to control a 3D model of motorised lighting louvers.

Leadenhall Street Lift visualisation

A program created to demonstrate how the lifts would operate at peak times based on output from "Elevate", a lift analysis program.

This was a program created using a combination "MaxScript" for 3D Studio MAX and Macromedia director.

The Max Script read though all the output data from the "Elevate" lift analysis program and generate a series of animations. The Director program was a holder for the animations and allowed the user to select different views at different times of the day.
